It’s one of those places you can only find if you’re looking for it. Much like its namesake, it’s small and discrete, but a true treasure once it’s discovered: it’s time to visit Sedef Pâtisserie.
Founded by Lausanne local sisters Céline and Laetitia, Sedef Pâtisserie‘s origin stories are rooted in formative memories of their childhood. Summers spent in Istanbul, working alongside their grandmother in a pastry shop; the smell of orange blossom and familiar taste of pistachio lent to the creative longing in both of them. Being born in Lausanne but raised between the cultures of the East and the West, Sedef Pâtisserie was a way to not only navigate life between two perspectives but also two passions: art and gastronomy.
Inside the shop you’re greeted by the warm smiles of Laetitia; the window of delicacies boasts the most decadent selection of both sweet and savory perfectly bite-sized choux, as well as a house specialty Adas (small and light rectangular cakes with airy not-too-sweet cream and meant to be eaten with your fingers). Along the walls of the pâtisserie, you’ll find artwork from small-scale artists, most of it for sale and rotating constantly, bringing new artists to light on a regular basis. It is clear that their objective is to highlight and enhance artistic creation and pay respect to local terroir and culture – it’s also clear that this is not your average pâtisserie.
TLG Tip: Not a huge dessert person? Neither are we…but the desserts made at Sedef have mastered the delicate balance of being light, airy, and not too sweet. The choux are a perfect bite-sized portion and change regularly according to the season and the products available from regional producers. This means you can try something different each time you visit!
