Easily missed, O Mylos (meaning 'the Mill') is a new Greek spot here in Lausanne just a short walk up from Riponne. Inside you'll be greeted by Yannis - owner, chef, waiter - a one-man show whose love of his Greek heritage and cuisine prompted him to change careers entirely and open this quaint and welcoming restaurant.
Situated right next to the Inovil car park entrance just above Riponne on Rue du Valentin, this tiny restaurant would be easily missed if it weren’t for the crowd congregated outside. Luckily for us, this group was waiting for their to-go orders and we managed to snag a highly coveted seat inside. Yannis mentioned we were lucky – normally these tables are all reserved and with there only being 4 tables, it’s easy to see why. We settled in and perused the menu, finding it difficult to choose with the variety of fresh and flavorful Greek specialities.
Yannis is friendly and accommodating – and with the understanding that he is there alone, waiting on tables, cooking the food, answering the phone, and preparing takeaway orders, it’s hard not to be endeared to him. He doesn’t rush you or make you feel anxious – quite the contrary – he is genuinely excited to explain the dishes and encourages certain choices over others. He makes several recommendations and we follow suit, not disappointed in a single dish. The tzatziki is a showstopper for us, and though we are meant to eat it with the freshly grilled pita, we can’t help but dip our lemony potatoes in it – an explosion of zesty and savory flavors. The gyro papou is generously stuffed with homemade beef meatballs, lemony potatoes, tomatoes, green peppers, and tzatziki. The meat is moist and tender and perfectly seasoned, the pita soft and fresh. Though we cannot finish the portion, we are already dreaming about our next visit to O Mylos. Only this time we won’t risk it – we’ll make sure a table has our name on it.
