Les Ateliers: Vevey’s not-so-hidden gastronomic gem

December 1, 2022

Vevey is home to many food-related treasures, not least a giant fork partially submerged in the lake indicating the presence of an interactive museum of food. Aside from that, it’s worth taking a short train ride along the Swiss Riviera for a gastronomic experience with an industrial twist at Les Ateliers.

Les Ateliers (The Workshops) is housed in an industrial building with a rich history. The building was originally constructed in 1842 and was later home to the metal engineering company Ateliers de constructions mécaniques de Vevey (ACMV), which closed for good in 1992. Located next to Vevey train station, the building then lay abandoned for 25 years! As part of a development project, the building was restored to its former glory and now boasts a mix of luxury loft apartments, conference rooms, and a lovely restaurant.

Run by restauranteurs Jean-Sébastien Ribette and Sahondra Verdan, Les Ateliers represents the best of both worlds: the industrial and the luxury, the gastronomique and the bistronomique, the old and the new. Jean-Sébastien and Sahondra are no strangers to the local culinary scene having previously run the Auberge de la Veveyse in Saint-Légier-La Chiésaz. After sixteen successful years, 16 Gault Millau points, and one Michelin star, they decided to embark on an adventure bringing new life to an old workshop.

"This place is full of history: one can sense the presence of those who lived and worked within these walls for nearly a century. And so the story continues, as we add to it our own experiences, lives and work. We are so fortunate to have such a fantastic opportunity to be able to continue this great history by adding a little of our own to the mix."

At Les Ateliers, under high ceilings and surrounded by some of the original workshop fixtures, you can enjoy one of two different culinary experiences: the Brasserie, a celebration of tradition and simplicity; and the Restaurant, a quest for originality and creativity. Chef Ribette has been perfecting this dual approach for almost two decades.

On this occasion, we chose the restaurant experience to celebrate a special occasion. Each of the four courses was delicious and it was easy to remark the care, attention, and pride infused in every element of the dishes served. We enjoyed a savory cake with sun-dried tomatoes and olives, langoustine on a bed of celery-style risotto, chicken supreme with black rice, followed by cheese and dessert. The atmosphere was calm and convivial, and the entire space was buzzing by the end of the evening.

You can try the Restaurant experience from 125 CHF per person, and the Brasserie experience either à la carte or choose a menu at 68 CHF. The menu changes approximately every 6 weeks depending on the season.
