Originally a petrol station now turned café, this is where Lausanne residents can still get their fuel for the day, with a focus on locally-roasted specialty coffee and afternoon snacks or aperitif.
We sat on the terrace of La Station on Rue des Rosiers admiring the elegance of 20th century architecture that lined the street. The rod-iron balconies painted to match their shutters, the delicate corniche projecting from the rooftops offering function and charm, and the palazzo-style windows presenting a privileged vantage point for inhabitants. We settled in and the pleasant early summer air invited us to stay awhile. We wanted a coffee, and were surprised when we saw that on La Station’s menu they offered a French press exactly for a moment like this; a moment when you want to take your time and have the freedom to do so.
At La Station, they offer fresh and local products for any hour of the day. Try their specialty slow brew coffee and homemade granola in the morning, a homemade sandwich or salad in the afternoon, or apero with local wines and craft beer. If that’s not enough to pique your interest, we also discovered that this spot is special for more than their food and beverage offerings or perfectly placed terrace for people-watching. At the heart of La Station is a core philosophy to help those who are looking to reintegrate back into the workforce. They have put measures in place and plan to work closely with two incredible organizations called Atelier L’Eveil and Mentor Energy .
A stop at La Station may be “fuel” for us physically, but we love the kind of fuel that will be injecting into the city–one that believes in the worth of each individual. Now that’s something we can raise a cup to.
