It honestly felt like we were transported into a Jane Austen novel (without the angst). The property of Chateau de Vullierens is expansive and manicured; sitting atop the rolling hills and vineyards just above Morges, boasting a panoramic view of Lake Geneva and the Alps. It’s a beautiful property in its own right, but the icing on the cake is its world-renowned gardens.
Every year the public has only six weeks to enjoy the beautiful gardens; from the 10th of May until June 22nd, the flowers are at their peak–vibrant colors and vast varieties of irises, lilies, roses, and peonies all emanate the fragrances of spring and summer. Not only are these gardens for flower and nature enthusiasts, but also for admirers of art. This year, the gardens have welcomed famous French sculptor Christian Lapie, who has constructed 15 major works which are exhibited throughout the gardens. These impressive sculptures integrate nicely into their surrounding environment, some competing with nature’s grandeur standing tall at 6 meters high.
We recommend heading to the gardens, having a stroll, then stopping by the Café des jardins for a drink, a snack, apéro, or to eat a full meal. The menu consists of a variety of salads, grilled meat, charcuterie, sandwiches, flambées, and pâtisseries; wine, beer, and non-alcoholic drinks are available as well. There is also a popular Sunday brunch which is a mix of sweet and salty foods served buffet style and includes mixed meat from the grill as well–reservations are required. The café is found right at the entrance, with tables spread out under a canopy of trees–ah, it’s hard not to feel at ease!
After the café, head over to the boutique where you can find wine and other products from the property; we stocked up on some regional Chasselas, Garanoir, and Rosé. We also had our eye on adorable quilted stuffed animals for children, as well as some floral tea sets, and a darling little birdhouse. Whether you’re a couple, a family, a group of friends, or single–this is a beautiful way to spend a morning or afternoon–strolling amongst nature’s best, on one of the most delightful properties in Vaud.
