The terrace of Hungry Bear is easily missable – but maybe that’s why we love it. Walking the streets of sous gare under the canopy of verdant birch and oak trees, it’s a hidden perch and familiar sanctuary above the hustle and bustle below.
But if you’re one of the discerning coffee lovers of Lausanne, it’s a spot you should know well thanks to its sister shop just next door: Sleepy Bear Coffee. And similar to the way they brought coffee to the next level here in Lausanne, they are attempting to break the mold with their new adventure into the food scene.
Focusing on the locality and proximity of their products, as well as small producers, Hungry Bear is a restaurant that aims to surprise and delight with unusual combinations, colors, and textures. Their daily offering of brunch toasts, both sweet and savory, as well as their emphasis on healthy, flavorful dishes brings a refreshing and dependable spot to our rotation. Jean-Charles Gasche, partner and chef of Hungry Bear, explained the team’s philosophy, “Until now with restaurants in Lausanne, you could either get something aiming to get a Michelin Star in a somewhat strict setting or something more casual but where quality and innovation were not present. We decided to propose the highest level of quality of ingredients, yet in an ambiance where everyone feels like they are home.”
You notice the difference when the colorful and ripe tomatoes topped with local Mozza’fiato burrata burst with fresh and creamy flavor, or when taking a sip of their iced chai latte deeply infused with African spices; a balance of depth and refreshment. Even their wine list is exclusively from high-quality Swiss producers, chosen specifically for how they will pair with their creative dishes. It’s the small details that make the biggest difference – and here, at Hungry Bear, it’s noticeable.

This season, the terrace at Hungry Bear is easily one of the most underrated spots to pass an afternoon under the dappled summer and autumn light. Indulge in their carefully curated seasonal menu, sip on their version of a Spritz made with ‘aperol’ from Valais, or grab a crisp glass of biodynamic local white wine. It’s a friendly and familiar sanctuary in the trees with incredible service and delightful dishes for every taste.
