Known for bringing their specialty coffee to Lausanne and injecting well-crafted joy into our morning routine, Sleepy Bear Coffee shop is now expanding their efforts and expertise to the breakfast, lunch, and dinner scene. Hungry Bear is the newest member of the ‘Lausanne Bear’ family, and with the amount of creativity and talent on the team, it’s a beautiful space worth adding to your list.
If you’re a coffee lover in Lausanne, you should already be well aware of the popular café sous-gare, Sleepy Bear. This charming little establishment is known for its high-quality coffee blends, which are best enjoyed accompanied by a freshly baked croissant, brownie, or slice of banana bread – depending on your preference. If you’re unsure of what to go for, the staff have an encyclopedic knowledge of the blends they have to offer and are very passionate about sharing that knowledge with customers.
But it doesn’t end there…
This Spring 2022, the team behind Sleepy Bear has awoken their ravenous cousin, Hungry Bear. This stylish space recently housed the Crêperie de Grancy and has now been converted into Lausanne’s newest breakfast, lunch, or dinner spot.
Just a few steps from Lausanne train station, Hungry Bear boasts a spacious dining area infused with elements of dusky pink and natural wood, with fresh flowers adorning the long communal table in the middle of the room.
Hungry Bear, like its drowsy neighbor, is open 7 days a week, from 9 am until 9 pm. The kitchen is open from 12 pm serving a quality selection of simple, delicious food from a menu curated by chef, Jean-Charles Gasche. Monsieur Gasche originally trained as an engineer at Lausanne’s very own EPFL, then went on to work in tech start-ups in San Francisco, before returning to his true love of haute cuisine.
The dishes on offer are composed of fresh, local produce, and are complemented by a variety of carefully selected bio wines, artisanal beers, and organic juices. We tried the pavé de saumon, which was served with a delicately salty mousse d’anchois and paired with seasonal broccoli and asparagus, as well as a pleasantly surprising sprinkle of crispiness from the quinoa popcorn. Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to try the desserts but will definitely make time for that when we visit again.
Whether you’re in the mood for a quick lunch or an indulgent dinner, check this place out. The menu will be updated on a seasonal basis, and we can’t wait to see what they come up with next.
