The origin story may lack glamor but it’s relatable to most. It begins with two drunk friends on New Year’s Day with a craving and no way to satiate it. If only they knew back in 2016 this boozy late-night yearning for fries would end up being a blessing to all of us today. What they did know, however, was that there wasn’t a place to get authentic Belgian fries in the area. The next day they realized that their idea still had merit, and three years later opened their first friterie in Geneva.
Fast forward to this year, and we’ve found that Belga has expanded and graced Lausanne with its friendly and fried goodness. Offering double-fried frites (in beef-fat nonetheless) made from Swiss potatoes alongside several other Belgian specialties, meats, and sauces, this is a no-fuss, no-diets type of place. Don’t expect to get any Instagram content, as the majority of the food is a shade of beige and…well..deep-fried. But don’t let that discourage you from trying something new. We recommend trying out the bitterballen–basically a mashed potato, beefy purée mixture that is fried in a ball form. To wash down your crunchy, crispy, and absolutely delicious snacks, they offer a huge variety of Belgian beers on tap.
Dine-in, dine out on their sidewalk terrace, or grab a [gloriously greasy] bag and make your way to Parc Mon Repos for a picnic. This is one of those spots where we can imagine grabbing a crisp beer, a side of frites or bitterballen, and catching up with friends .
TLG Tip: The “normal” size fries is anything but normal. It could feed an entire pack of wolves.
