It was a rainy morning–the kind that pulls people back under the warmth of the duvet covers, wishing to hibernate until the first songs of spring. We braved the weather to head out to Geneva (for other very important reasons), but decided to make a little stop first. We needed a ‘pick-me-up’; one that involved a great cup of coffee. We had heard about Birdie Food & Coffee from a couple of friends, but had no idea just how good it was.
Started by two friends: Florent, the coffee maestro/barista who makes a wicked flat white, and Bastien, the chef who worked for none other than Alain Ducasse in Paris, they began their adventure in October 2014. They both felt an absence of good quality food and coffee in a friendly and well-designed space. Their food is fresh, healthy, seasonal, and changes daily based on what’s available. Their coffee is equitably and thoughtfully sourced, and roasted with care.
The space is tiny; four tables of two and a window bar seat that sits four. It radiates coziness and simplicity in the best way. Walking in, it feels as if you’ve been transported to another city–we were expecting to look out of the window and see bicyclists passing by and canals, reminding us of a gezellig Amsterdam café.
The menu is direct, but charming and gourmet in the best of ways–we tried the poached egg breakfast and can honestly say that this egg was cooked to perfection (which, in our experience, is tough to do!). Paired with a fresh salad, a thick slice of gruyere, butter & confiture–it was satisfying, enjoyable, and most likely will become a little tradition of ours (even if that means going all the way to Geneva!).
Their single-origin coffee was satisfyingly strong but well-balanced. Warning: they don’t serve decaf as their menu reads: “Decaffeinated coffee? Useless warm brown water!” 😉
We recommend trying to grab a window bar seat–watch passersby and revel in the warmth of your surroundings.
Thank you Birdie for making our rainy day a little bit brighter. See you soon! Birdie Food & CoffeeRue des Bains 401205 GenevaTuesday-Friday 8am-5pmSaturday & Sunday 10am-6pm+41.(0)22.320.29.00 Follow them on Facebook to keep up with the latest.
